Around 50 colleagues from universities all over Europe came to Lille to discuss innovative and creative ways to improve the experience of incoming students. Practitioners came from various roles: some looked after incoming Erasmus students, whereas others managed summer schools or TNE projects that included a period of study on their campus. Other colleagues worked within international recruitment and were equally keen to ensure that visiting students have a positive academic, cultural and social experience whilst studying abroad.

As well as discussing ways of helping incoming students adapt to their new learning environment, Dr. Martin Hyde outlined strategies to help students overcome their initial culture shock. Dr. Jos Beelen, Professor of Global Learning at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, also led a session on Internationalisation at Home and how to make the most of the cultural capital that students bring with them on campus. In addition, colleagues from the EUA committee outlined a number of low cost/no cost activities to enhance the student experience of welcome week.

Colleagues reported a productive and enjoyable day, with the EUA dinner (held the previous evening) a particular highlight.
